The Impact of Data Assets on the Enterprises Innovation Chain and Mechanisms Involved

Abstract

Based on data of China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2022， this paper employs a two-way fixed effects model to explore the impact of data assets on the enterprise innovation chain and the underlying mechanisms. The research shows that data assets have a positive effect on the input， output， and return ends of the enterprise innovation chain， and indirectly influence the innovation chain through mechanisms of alleviating external financing constraints， enhancing internal financing capabilities， promoting collaborative innovation， and reducing agency costs， besides， the influence exhibit a chain effect on the enterprise innovation process. Further analysis reveals that executives’ backgrounds in information technology and media attention play a positive moderating role. The impact of data assets on the innovation chain is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises and larger companies. Therefore， to fully leverage data assets in promoting the enterprise innovation chain and unlocking their value， the government， while continuously optimizing the public policy environment and improving digital infrastructure， should actively introduce targeted financial policies and establish technology collaboration platforms to unblock the intermediate links that enable data assets to propel the development of the enterprise innovation chain. Meanwhile， enterprises should make full use of data assets to integrate resources and strengthen corporate cooperation， thereby enhancing the efficiency of both the input and output ends of the innovation chain. Furthermore， they should enhance the information technology backgrounds of top management teams， improve the decision-makers’ data assets application ability， and leverage media attention to expand the market influence of innovation outcomes， ultimately fostering the comprehensive development of the enterprise innovation chain.
