Impact of ESG Performance on Corporate Green Technology Innovation

Abstract

Taking Chinese A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2009 to 2023 as the research sample， we explore the impact of corporate ESG performance on green technology innovation and its mechanism. The study reveals the following findings： 1） corporate ESG performance has a significant positive impact on green technology innovation； 2） better ESG performance can help ease the financing constraints faced by enterprises， enhance their financing ability， and thus improve their green technology innovation； 3） ESG performance has a more obvious promoting effect on the green technology innovation for enterprises facing high level environmental regulation， enterprises with high degree of market competition in their industries， and non-state-owned enterprises. Therefore， we should accelerate the construction of an ESG evaluation system that can align with international mainstream standards， further strengthen ESG concepts， formulate green innovation development strategies， and further enhance the green innovation capability of enterprises by consolidating the ESG investment concepts of external stakeholders.
