Abstract:The cultural context of universities refers to the unique cultural connotations and spiritual characteristics that gradually take shape during the development of the university. It is often manifested through campus spatial planning and layout, architectural forms, and landscape construction. The inheritance of the cultural context of universities is of great significance and value in highlighting the educational mission, enhancing the campus quality, and strengthening the sense of belonging among teachers and students. Judging from the practical exploration of Beijing Jiaotong University and the development process of universities in China, three aspects can be considered as the basic routes to inheriting the cultural context of universities through spatial layout. Firstly, maintaining the coherence of the overall architectural layout with the original style through appropriate innovation, adding new ideas while “following the traditions”. Secondly, continuing and deepening the cultural connotations by using campus cultural symbols to showcase the “past and present” of campus development. Thirdly, constructing a characteristic cultural belt to present the development context of the campus.
